Guitar Maintenance

Clean your strings!  Most people clean their cars but not their guitars. A guitar should be cleaned after each hour of playing.

You need a clean, lint free cloth (an old pillowslip or hankie works well). Place the cloth under the bridge end of each string, one at a time. Drag the cloth along the entire length of the string up towards the nut and back. Repeat this for each string to remove all Finger Filth. Doing this will definitely prolong string and fret life.

Most people just clean across the top of the strings and miss the Bad Stuff lurking underneath between the string and the fret.

Guitar Buying Advice

The advent of the internet means that it has never been easier for guitarists to buy the  guitar of their dreams. People bid for items or buy them from stores in Australia or overseas and wait expectantly for their purchase to arrive. Sometimes the guitar they receive has is not what they expected, often because they did not have the expertise to evaluate it before buying. This can mean hundreds of dollars in costly repairs. I know because I work on these guitars every week.

The good news is that I now provide a consultancy service. For a fee of $75 I will give you up to an hour of my time to advise you on your purchase. The most accurate advice can be given if I can actually inspect the guitar, if not, good quality digital photos from many angles, can give me a good idea of a guitar’s authenticity and value. This is especially important if purchasing a vintage guitar.

After 29 years of repairing thousands of guitars, I can give you my expert opinion on whether the guitar you are thinking of purchasing will be right for you.

Disclaimer: All care will be taken to ensure an accurate and honest pre-purchase appraisal is given, but no responsibility is taken for items that are misrepresented by the seller.
